SUSHI ROLL YOYO
THE PROJECT
Over the course of the Fall 2019 semester, I worked with a small team to design and manufacture a unique yoyo at a small scale. We explored design options, considered manufacturing limitations and effects, and eventually achieved our goal of producing 50 working yoyos!
THE PROCESS
Starting from over 50 ideas for yoyo designs, we converged on the sushi roll after a round of voting and discussion. From there, we began to plan how we would split the design into multiple parts, and how those parts would be assembled.
MOLD DESIGN
After modeling our initial design in CAD, we began to machine our molds. The rice was made by gluing real rice to a 3D printed base, while the rest of the components were injection molded.
MAKING ADJUSTMENTS
After we machined our initial molds, we tested them on the injection molder to see if adjustments were necessary. After re-modeling and re-machining each part, we arrived at a set of molds that produced parts in the specifications we needed.
ASSEMBLY
Finally, we produced 100 in-spec pieces for each component and assembled our yoyso!
